The Manger
"She
gave birth to her firstborn, a son. She wrapped him in cloths and placed him in a manger, because
there was no room for them in the inn" Luke 2:7. NIV
A
manger according to the dictionary is: "A trough or an open box in which feed for livestock is placed." This box
held a baby, the King of Kings actually, it was not clean and sterile, it was dirt and straw. This baby came into the world,
making headlines all the while. An Angel appeared to proclaim the birth to both Mary, "But the angel said to her, "Do
not be afraid, Mary, you have found favor with God. You will be with child and give birth to a son, and you are to give him
the name Jesus. He will be great" and to Joseph, "an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream and said, "Joseph
son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit"
(Matthew 1:20 NIV). An angel appeared to lowly shepherds that were watching their sheep in the fields "Do not be afraid.
I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you;
he is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger" (Luke
10-12). There were Wise Men from the East that followed a star just to bring Him gifts of royalty such as gold, frankincense,
and myrrh and they bowed down and worshiped Him, "The ‘wise men from the East' who came to adore Jesus in Bethlehem"
(Matthew 2). This baby lying in a manger even drew the attention of the great King Herod who wanted this baby destroyed all
because he knew what the future held for this baby boy that lay in this lowly wooden box. The manger, a lowly start for such
a King, whose birth was proclaimed by angels, but a start that the world still talks about today as we celebrate the birth
of the New Born King. As you celebrate this Christmas day remember the manger and the life that was given up to bring to
us ever lasting life.
For God so loved the world, that He
gave His only begotten Son,
that whosoever believeth in Him
should not perish,
but have everlasting life (John 3:16).
